Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology is shaping the microelectronics age. ZEISS semiconductor manufacturing equipment makes microchips smaller as well as more powerful, more energy-efficient and more cost-effective.

ZEISS is the global technology leader in the production of systems and modules for microchip production. With semiconductor manufacturing optics, photomask systems and process control solutions, ZEISS supplies key technologies for the production of ultra-fine conductor track structures on silicon wafers – the raw material used to make microchips. Advances in computer technology largely rely on the ongoing development of optical lithography – every new generation enables even finer structures to be produced on the microchips.

This makes circuits more compact, resulting in more powerful, more energy-efficient and more cost-effective microchips every year. ZEISS has been driving the development of semiconductor manufacturing technology right from day one. ZEISS’ new and unique extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography has created series of further generations of microchips with ever greater integration density.

Industrial Quality & Research ensures quality standards and enables scientific research. Industry and science use ZEISS coordinate measuring machines, microscope systems and software solutions to identify the structures and processes.

ZEISS microscopes visualize tiny structures in nano dimensions, and highly efficient metrology systems guarantee productivity and quality assurance in industry. Prominent scientists put their trust in ZEISS microscopes when conducting their research. Robert Koch, who discovered the bacterium that causes tuberculosis in 1900, was just one of our famous customers. To this very day, researchers from all over theworld use light, electron/ion and X-ray microscopes from ZEISS to make even the smallest structures and processes visible.

Industrial Metrology also boasts a tradition spanning 100 years. Measuring technology and software solutions from ZEISS provide perfect results in many sectors of industry – in automobile and aircraft construction, for example, where precision, quality and efficiency are essential success factors. In this way, the reliable, intuitive measuring technology ideally supports efficient quality inspection in production. In addition to extensive service offerings, innovative technologies such as 3D X-ray metrology round off the portfolio.

Expert Talk

From Inspiration to Application

A meeting of minds

Professor from école Polytechnique and Physics Nobel Laureate, Dr. Gérard Mourou, former ZEISS President and CEO Prof. Dr. Michael Kaschke, and Prof. Dr. Andreas Tünnermann, Head of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) and Director of the Institute of Applied Physics at the University of Jena, discuss the interdependence of basic science, applied research, and the research being conducted in the industry. The three of them met after the opening of the Max Planck School of Photonics in Jena, where they discussed high-power lasers and how they have redefined basic science, engineering, and medical treatments for patients.

Highlights

of Fiscal Year 2018/19

Even 50 years after the moon landing on July 20, 1969, the pictures taken that day are as fascinating as ever.
A small click on the shutter release – and a giant leap in photography for mankind

Even 50 years after the moon landing on July 20, 1969, the pictures taken that day are as fascinating as ever. The fact that this event has become so firmly anchored in people's memories is mainly down to the unique photos from the Apollo missions. The first pictures taken on the surface of the moon, as well as the view from the moon back to Earth, continue to inspire generations. And the lenses for the cameras used on every mission were made by ZEISS.

New possibilities with 5G
New possibilities with 5G

5G will enable a wide range of sensor, management and quality data to be generated, assessed, and transferred in networked production. Machines and systems will be able to communicate directly with each other. This will provide new opportunities to achieve more flexibility, transparency, and automation in production while further increasing quality.

Multifunctional smart glass
Multifunctional smart glass

ZEISS has developed a technology that, for the first time ever, makes it possible to add smart functions to transparent glass or plastic over large areas and in a host of different ways. The transparent surfaces with integrated, invisible microstructured optics permit a
range of different applications. For example, the glass panels in the windows of a smart home can perform monitoring duties, measure temperature or display information.

Not only do children suffering from albinism have to protect their skin from the sun, their eyes are also very sensitive to light. ZEISS provides support to a home in Tanzania where experts examine children with albinism and provide them with eyeglasses featuring special filters for their light-sensitive eyes, thus allowing them to lead more independent lives.

Strategic Projects

Innovations that Shape the Future

Venture portfolio

Innovations are the lifeblood of ZEISS. Through a process of trial and error, Carl Zeiss wrote the history of the high-tech group of companies founded back in 1846. Ernst Abbe, business partner to the company founder, turned the method into a systematic, scientific technique. This marked the beginning of more than 170 years of ongoing innovation.
